3 Ways Coding Helps Kids Learn Mathematics

Coco has team members in a number of countries, so we often debate whether it should be called ‘math’ or ‘maths’, but whatever you call mathematics, it’s a subject you either love or hate! Traditionally, mathematics in school is a series of problems that must be solved on a piece of paper. When you're 6 years old and more concerned about playtime than sitting still, it can be hard to appreciate the real world application of maths.

According to a new study, most students said they would enjoy maths more if they were taught how they might use it in the future. This is where coding comes in. Coding classes for kids are a fun and interactive way for children to learn better mathematical skills, as well as creativity, collaboration and communication. You don’t need to be planning a career in coding to benefit from learning how to code.

Here are a few ways that coding lessons can help with mathematics….

1. Coding teaches the fundamentals

Coding can help children better understand pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, and statistics, even if they’re not yet studying those topics at school. Mathematics is used in just about every stage of writing code, whether it’s planning what to build, using variables, coding functions or processing data. Before they know it, they’ll be mastering different types of mathematics techniques, which can only help their in-school performance.

2. Coding can help prepare for standardised testing

No one is a fan of standardised tests, but they are an important part of a child's education. Our coding classes for kids help to develop reasoning and problem-solving skills, by applying coding and maths techniques in creative projects. Children gain confidence and knowledge that goes beyond what is taught in a boring textbook, and are better prepared for tests like the SAT, ACT, GED, and GRE.

3. Coding makes mathematics FUN

Mathematics doesn’t need to be boring! Interactive learning is proven to be the best way to keep kids engaged and to help them actually retain information. Building games and animations with code is a great example of interactive learning and is a lot of fun. Plus, our coding lessons involve creative themes - such as animals, sports, and magic - to further engage each child’s imagination. Not only can kids learn about coding AND mathematics, but they’ll also learn interesting facts about the world around them.

In summary

Learning to code can help children understand how maths fits into the real world, expand on what they learn in school, and build their confidence. Coding is also a fun way to learn math and encourage creativity. If you’d like to give your child a maths head-start, sign them up for one of our coding classes for kids, and we’ll make mathematics fun again!
